Lace Sculpture - Hibiscus

I guess this is the next step after something like the Wild Rose Bowl. Though this looks complex, this Hibiscus is extremely easy to make! The petals and leaves stitch easily as they are not dense - the stitches cover quite evenly. You get full instructions on how to assemble your flower and you can also read below to see how it is done. The sections are designed so they automatically curve and curl once you rinse out the stabilizer. This can also be a bowl without the center stamen. You get the flower in two sizes and three sizes of each leaf so you can decide how many leaves you want with your flower. If you wanted, you could stitch both the small and large petals and set one inside the other for a full ruffly flower.

How to Assemble

First stitch out designs on water soluble stabilizer and do not rinse. Then stitch all petal sections to the small flower center. Do not stitch the sides together. Holding the two stamen sections back to back (the design has two sections so they stitch at the same time), zig zag all but the lower edge. After rinsing, I put a pencil inside to hold it in a rounded shape and set aside to dry. I then made a *donut* of aluminum foil and after rinsing the petals, set my petals in the center of the donut. When I pushed the center of the flower down, the petals curled and overlapped themselves. I rearranged a few of them until I was satisfied with the look

I added a wad of aluminum foil where I wanted the petals to stand up a little more. I then set this aside to dry. I chose to stitch three leaves for my sample and before rinsing, I attached them with a zig zag stitch to the leaf center. You will get several sizes of centers so you can choose how large a leaf circle you want. After rinsing I also used wads of aluminum foil to shape the leaves. When the flower was dry, I put some small hand stitches using the same embroidery thread where the petals touched. You could also use hot glue to do this. Once I had enough places tacked to hold the petals in place, I sewed the center stamen to the flower base. This could also be done with a glue gun. I plan to permanently attach both the flower and leaf assemblies to a felt circle when I am satisfied how I want them. :)
